Steady Now
Flash fiction/poetry - 2020
Bare hands needle into the saturated flesh of the earth, deeper and deeper. A little hole allows possibilities to lie in wait. Dirt flecks crumble away, staining the creases and folds of prying fingers.
With meticulous precision, she gathers the roots of an ever-shifting, blossoming vessel in her weathered but nimble fingers. The sun’s tender caress tickles her back and stains her plant with freckles of gold as it’s lowered into the ground.
She heaps dirt back over the twining roots, ensuring the sanctuary and purity of her newborn passion.
It smiles for the sun. The girl smiles back.
